Electro-Voice ELX-112 12 pouces enceinte passive 2 voies
When you're speaking about loudspeakers, you're speaking about the last pieces of a chain that start from the musician ,the music itself, the various recording that includes microphones, compressors, filters and various effects, the support if any (CD,...) and to follow, the rendering material: players, mixers, amps and yes! finally the speakers. This last piece of hardware is critical and can ruin all the work made before very easily. That's why you should always consider to spend some extra money for loudspeakers.
Sure, there is always "better" but when you arrive at a certain level of quality, one should consider what will be the use of the speakers: monitor, size of the rooms you're performing in,etc...and here's when I arrive to my choice of the ELX-112
These speakers are perfect for small to medium rooms (250w rms). They are passive meaning that you need an separate amp to power them. I don't care carrying an extra amp as anyway, you'll need cables to hook your speakers and a 220v socket. Moreover, if something goes wrong with the amp (a loudspeaker can fall when placing it for exemple), it's easier to find an amp than to try to open and fix the speaker.
Now for the musical, these are very very good speakers. They really do what they are meant for: cover the full range. The sound is clear and after hours of continuous listening of various styles, my ears are not "tired" as they used to be with my former speakers. However, the basses are a little bit weak but this is normal: these are 12 inches loudspeakers. You can always add an extra boom bass if you want some more juice but this is not critical.
